Frequently Asked Questions

How does email at USC work and what are my responsibilities?

As a student at USC:

Please note that email has been adopted as the primary mechanism for sending official communications to USC students. Students, therefore, must check email regularly in order to stay abreast of important messages and notifications (including e·bill notices for monthly billing statements). Failure to read official university communications sent to students' official USC email addresses (ending in "@usc.edu"), does not absolve students from knowing and complying with the content of official communications. For more information on the university's email policy, please refer to the "University Governance" section in SCampus (http://www.usc.edu/scampus).

As a student at USC, you get your own free computer account which gives you email access, storage space on a USC server, Internet access and the ability to create your own Web page. Some helpful links:

It is your responsibility to check your official USC email account frequently for important messages and to make sure you do not exceed the quota on your email account. You may choose to forward to another email address provided by your academic unit or to your personal email account, however it is your responsibility to make sure that your forwarding is set up correctly.

Email Safety

Neither USC nor ITS will ever request that you submit personal information, including any passwords, over email. Treat any email that requests your password or other personal information as a phishing attempt; do not reply to such messages.

  • 08/27/2008 - Information Technology Services (ITS) would like all USC account holders to beware of illegitimate, or phishing, email messages with variations of the Subject line “Re-Activate Your Account.” In the past year, this type of email has become increasingly common at colleges and universities across the country.

ITS provides USC students, faculty, and staff with free antivirus and firewall software for home and office use on the ITS software download page at the address below. (You will need a valid USC login in order to access the page.) https://software.usc.edu

Email accounts for USC alumni:

Although official USC email accounts only remain active for a short time after graduation, please note that OASIS and USCe.pay access will remain for up to 6 months after graduation.

Did you know that as a USC alumnus, you can have an email address @alumni.usc.edu that you can use to forward your email to whatever ISP you happen to be using? Here's a link to more information:
