Encryption Requirements for Newly Purchased Laptops and Mobile Storage Devices

Dear buyers/users of laptops and mobile storage devices:

A memo announcing a USC policy that requires the encryption of newly purchased laptops and mobile storage devices has been issued by Robert V. Johnson, Associate Senior Vice President, Financial and Business Services, and Laura LaCorte, Associated Senior Vice President, Compliance.

The requirement to encrypt applies to laptops and mobile storage devices purchased on or after April 22, 2009, and applies to all sources of university funds, including sponsored project accounts, and to laptops and mobile storage devices that are used for USC business purposes but purchased with personal money.

The full content of the memo is posted below:

To facilitate compliance with this policy, a website has been established. The website includes a list of contract suppliers that have agreed to help the university with this effort, and procedures departments should follow when purchasing laptops and mobile storage devices.
